CODOS UPDATE September 20: Snow school for water professionals, wy2023 season summary

Greetings from Silverton,

The new water year is just a little over a week away. Silverton saw it’s first frost of the season last week. It is that time of year when we shift focus from summer catch-up activities to the winter ahead.

WY2023 Season Summary: We posted our Season Summary Report for WY2023 to the CODOS website. The report is our attempt to characterize how the winter season unfolded. It includes a lot of tables and graphs. Hopefully it is a good reference when trying to remind yourself specifics that occurred during the winter. We reference these reports often when, after a few years go by, a reminder is needed.

Snow School for Water Professionals: We have had a few inquiries about when the Snow School for Water Professionals class will be held this winter, so we went ahead and set the dates for February 21-23, 2024. The combination classroom and field course will begin on Wednesday morning at our office in Silverton and end on Friday afternoon (2.5 days).  The class is perfect for anyone wanting to learn more about the role of snow and our mountain environments as it pertains to water resources, designed to enhance understanding of snowpack processes, snow monitoring and data. Please see details in the link above. Please email me (jderry@snowstudies.org) with any questions.

Chris George Talk in Durango: Chris George, our former board president, is giving a talk in Durango on October 3 at Powerhouse Science Center. The talk is titled “Preserving the Mining Past in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado”. Chris is a educator and avalanche pioneer. He helped establish Silverton as an avalanche research and snow science hub. Please see this link for more information.

We look forward to the snow falling and issuing more updates as the coming winter ramps up.

Take Care,

Jeff Derry
