CODOS Update March 11, 2021: Dust Event #2 Observed

Greetings from Silverton,

The snow had that look to it when walking around the day after a blustery storm passed through on Tuesday, the night of March 9. It looked like it was mixed with corn meal or some sort of baking flour, a telling indication that more than just snow fell. The overnight storm brought high winds and snow and thunder. Very weird to hear thunder during a snowstorm. On Monday, after a stretch of high winds, the good folks at Telluride Mountain observed dust in the alpine. On Tuesday at Swamp Angel no dust was apparent. On Wednesday after the overnight storm, dust was very apparent. So it may be that some locales received a dusting the first of the week followed by another dose Tuesday night. This appears to be a moderate event and relatively discreet in the snowpack.

We head out on CODOS tour after the storms settle, maybe next week? Hopefully the forecast everyone is abuzz about will come through with a lot more snow to dig when doing profiles. We will see how far the dust event made its way into Colorado from what we see here in the San Juans.

Take care and enjoy the snow,

Jeff Derry
